Roaming with o2 in Thuraya
Filed under: hacks, mobile things — nibbler @ 3:42
A customer of mine is currently in Namibia with a Thuraya satellite phone i sold him. Luckily i gave him a Thuraya Traveller SIM and did not advise him to use the O2 roaming. Last week I encountered problems with receiving calls on my Thuraya SO-2510 with my O2 Genion SIM in Thuraya roaming. SMS did work, outgoing too but no incoming calls. So i called the O2 helpdesk - after only three days I got one of the most remarkable calls I ever triggered by calling a customer care line.
she: “Hello this is $femalename from O2 - I’m calling regarding your complaint about the Thuraya roaming”
me: “excellent, what department are you calling from?”
she: “operations”
me: “beautiful - so we can talk to each other on a level that really helps us to figure out the problem in a fast way”
she: “??”
me: “so… when i call my number 01766666xxxx i get a ISDN release cause 1 - which means number unassigned - however don’t get an in-band announcement about it and i can of course only see the ISUP - i think you have more insight”
she: “!!”
me: “so what do you get?”
she: “one second… hmm. the same. but in deed not from our but from the foreign network. let me just check…”
me: “the hlr/vlr?”
she: “yes, in deed. hmm. looks allright.”
me: “mcc/mnc 424-05″?
she: “uhuh. is this thuraya?”
me: “yup it is. does my account have permission for roaming?”
she: “good point. *clickedyclick* yes - it has - this is strange.”
me: “it is - but you seem to have a working signalling link as i get SMS and everything”
she: “ok. yes. then signalling is working fine - besides that issue with your number being not reachable. but as far as i can see i can’t do anything for you right now - i will forward this to our guys that do roaming stuff as this seems to be a transport issue.”
me: “ok - if i may be of help for you just call at any time. it has been a pleasure”
she: “i can only return that” (…)
we did not swap phone numbers (damn, i should have asked. she did sound cute and clued - maybe next time).
However the story continues. Some minutes ago i tried again to phone my Thuraya phone and after some minute i got a noisy ringing indication and soon my SO-2510 rang. But the number it displayed was: +982188321647 (which is a number located in Iran) - so they somehow partially fixed it but seem to have really strange routing to Thuraya ;-) Another call revealed another number: +987117275945 - Every further call gave me one of the two numbers so I can only vaguely guess how ugly their termination method towards Thuraya currently is ;-)
btw. the Thuraya Eco SIMs have just arrived. If you’d like to have one, mail me or call +49-177-77-777-23. they cost Eur 25.- each and are valid for one year (incl $2 initial credit). Recurring fee is $2 per year. The minute to PSTN costs $0.39 and to Thuraya $0.20.

Motorola Satellite Series 9505 Pinout (incl. RS232)
Filed under: phones, hacks, mobile things, drop-a-link — nibbler @ 22:00
I wasn’t able to find this document on the Internet and maybe it may help other people to connect their Motorola 9505 Iridium telephone to their computer via RS232 serial cable. The 9505 btw. is a brilliant satellite telephone, I’m glad that i have swapped my 9500 for it.
Motorola 9505 pinout.

Motorola E1000 Monitor Mode explained.
Filed under: phones, hacks, mobile things — nibbler @ 2:01
Since I can’t find any decent documentation of the Motorola WCDMA/3G/UMTS (or whatever you call it) Network Monitoring Mode (or rather Engineering Mode as Motorola calls it) I’d like to publish some of my thoughts about this fancy screen:
Line one is the description of the screen “ServCell Rese” means that the displayed information is about the current “Serving Cell”, that’s the cell your phone is currently attached to. ratWCDMA in the second line means that the phone is currently using a UMTS network (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) IDLE means it’s just idling and not having a call or any other sort of traffic. This may change to DCH (Dedicated Channel) during a call. rssi (and here i’m giving a wild guess a try) is the level of “noise” the phone receives. CDMA is a multiplexing technique that does not separate speakers (base stations, mobile stations) by assigning frequencies or timeslots but by dividing them via codes. every mobile and base station sends on the same frequency but encoded with a specific code. once you know the code you can distinguish the station. in the meanwhile you hear ‘noise’ on that frequency. Of course the noise appears louder than the station you’re listening to if there is more than one concurrently sending station. Again… the rssi value may be something entirely different - this is just a wild guess :-). id seems to be the id the current cell is identified with in cdma. I think its correct name is “scrambling code”. The PSC is the primary synchronisation channel. It consists of a modulated code of length 256 and is transmitted once every slot and is the same for every cell in the system. qqmes seems to be the signal quality since it correlates with the next value in a suspicious way. qrmes undoubtedly is the current level the base station is being received by the mobile station in dBm (the closer the value to 0 is the better is your reception). The line with “qualmECN0h” is a total miracle to me - maybe something about error correction? sq is the difference between qqmin and qqmes. The next value “srx” is the difference between qrmes and qrmin two lines below. This value gives you the signal margin. The line with tres (maybe some threshold?) and the mr/p values doesn’t ring a bell. qqmin seems to be something like the lowest quality the phone can accept and qrmin the lowest signal level. I was not yet able to figure out what the following values except txra which seems to be the TX rate - the level the phone’s transmitter is sending.
Please use the comment function if you can help with documenting this engineering field test menu. You can also mail me gpg’ed if you care. My key-id is: 0xAC1D 95F2 (fingerprint: A5BF 5243 2FDD 653C 6A9A EE9B 1FAB D08E AC1D 95F2) Fetch it from the usual servers.
I hope this was of help for you. If you don’t know how to activate the engineering mode, you can drop me a mail too - to raise the bar a bit, please do it gpg encrypted to the address connected to the above stated key id - emails not matching this criteria will be silently discarded. I got a working FLEX file and a current SHX Firmware Image for E1000 and am willing to share, so please honor this at least by properly encrypting your mail with my public key. I will not answer any questions about how to flash motorola phones. again: do not ask me questions about how to operate your computer. RSD-Lite is out there and it’s very easy to use and straight forward, if you can’t operate it the monitoring mode won’t be of use for you anyway.
If you are interested in more information about UMTS and the UTRAN, umtsworld may be a valuable source of information for you.

Zynic routing equipment… now it’s bricked.
Filed under: hacks, my projects — nibbler @ 10:04
Please be sure that the boot image is correct or the system
WILL NOT BOOT!
Are you sure you want to overwrite the boot rom?
yes ...............* Summit24e3:14 #
* Summit24e3:14 # reboot
The configuration database has been changed (secondary configuration is selected).
Do you wish to save these changes (yes, no, or cancel) yes
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>!........
Lin said "Bug? Oh no! It is a feature :-)"
anybody with hints about how to unbrick a Summit24e3 may contact me via private mail and will receive a bottle of my favourite single malt via ups :-)
http://nibbler.de/summit.jpg (there is rumor that it’s possible to flash the bootloader via some pins of the serial port which are attached to that xilinx cpld)
in the meanwhile i’ll do the purple dance of madness…

Nokia E70 dissection
Filed under: phones, hacks, mobile things — nibbler @ 23:00
I’d like to share some pictures about the dissection of the keyboard part that can be flipped open. Yes i chose to possibly void my warranty and crack open a 500+Eur telephone. - Just for you my valued blog readers ;-)
http://nibbler.de/e70-dissection/
edit: i assume the 9-pin field provides some testpoints for the keyboard and the 4-pin field may be a jtag to the small natsemi chip next to it.
